St. Mary’s Takes 7th at Charleston Spring Intersectional

Charleston, S.C. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team finished in seventh in the first event of the spring season, picking up five spots on the second day of the College of Charleston Spring Coed Intersectional (February 21-22).  St. Mary's totaled 206 points in 12 completed races, finishing 30 points behind the University of Vermont for sixth place.  Senior Derick Vranizan (Seattle, Wash.) skippered the A division boat to sixth place with crew Maddie Jackson (So./Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Claire Collie (Sr./Narragansett, R.I.).

In B division, junior skipper Mike Kuschner (San Francisco, Calif.) finished ninth with crew Collie and Ben Lezin.  The Seahawk sailors posted 105 points, just five back of a seventh-place finish in B division.

Vranizan sailed A division with Jackson and Collie, tallying 101 points for a sixth-place effort.

Combined, the team scored a 206 point regatta, good for seventh place.  St. Mary's was ranked first in the nation coming into the spring season opener.

Eckerd College took top honors at the Intersectional with 94 points as the Tritons placed first in the B division and second in the A division.
