Seahawks Capture Bob Bavier Intersectional
Charleston, S.C. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team won the 10-team, Bob Bavier Team Race Intersectional hosted by the College of Charleston in South Carolina (February 28 - March 1). The top-ranked Seahawks posted a 16-5 record after 96 races to capture the regatta.
St. Mary's finished in a four-way tie for first after the first round robin. The Seahawks, along with No. 4 Georgetown University, No. 8 U.S. Naval Academy, and No. 15 SUNY Maritime, all owned a 7-2 record.
No. 7 Charleston notched a 9-0 mark in the second round robin, while St. Mary's once again earned a 7-2 log. The hosts were second behind the Seahawks with a 12-6 record after the two round robins as SMCM was tops in the standings at 14-4.
St. Mary's sealed the win with a 2-1 record in the final-four races. Charleston and Georgetown both finished with a 14-7 record but by virtue of the Hoyas' win over Charleston, GU garnered second and the host school third.
Juniors Jesse Kirkland (Warwick, Bermuda) and Ted Hale (Annapolis, Md.) and sophomore Michael Menninger (Newport Beach, Calif.) skippered for the Seahawks with crew Franny Kupersmith (So./Alexandria, Va.), Kelly Wilbur (Jr./Ipswich, Mass.), Caitlin Hill (Jr./Tiverton, R.I.), captain Jen Chamberlain (Sr./Alexandria, Va.) and Mike Kuschner (Jr./San Francisco, Calif.).
