Sailing Kicks of 2008-09 Campaign

The St. Mary's College of Maryland sailing team officially started the 2008-09 season this past weekend as the Seahawks competed in four regattas with two of them being hosted by Old Dominion University.

Anderson, Jr. Trophy
St. Mary's claimed 13th at the 2008 Harry H.
Anderson, Jr. Trophy regatta hosted by Yale University as the
Seahawks tallied 99 points. Sophomores Michael
Menninger (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Franny
Kupersmith (Alexandria, Va.) notched a seventh-place
finish in the A division, while junior Michael
Kuschner (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore
Maddie Jackson (Seattle, Wash.) took 14th in the B
division.
Laser South #1
Junior All-American Jesse
Kirkland (Warwick, Bermuda) came away with a fourth-place
finish with 100 points at the Laser South #1 hosted by the U.S.
Naval Academy. As one of the top 5 finishers,
Kirkland now advances to the Carl Van Duyne Trophy
(MAISA Singlehandeds) hosted by US Merchant Marine Academy on
October 11-12. Senior Derick Vranizan
(Seattle, Wash.) was fifth, while Gordon Lamphere
placed 12th.
ODU Radial
Invitational
Mimi Roller finished third at the
2008 Old Dominion University Radial Invitational as Roller totaled
45 points in the two-day event. She moved up two spots after
coming in fifth after first day of competition. Junior
All-American Sara Morgan Watters (Oxford, Md.)
took fifth at the regatta with a score of 72, while senior
Keisha Pearson (East Patchogue, N.Y.) was sixth
with 80.
ODU Riley
Cup
The Seahawks came in seventh place with a score of
109 at the 2008 ODU Riley Cup as senior Claire
Collie (Narragansett, R.I.) and sophomore Meredith
Powlison (Shelburne, Vt.) took sixth in the B division
with 47 points in eight races. Freshman Wick
Dudley and junior Abby Rowlands (Shaker
Heights, Ohio) finished ninth in the A division with a total of 62
points.
