No. 4 Seahawks Take Fifth at MAISA Coed Dinghy Championship
Throggs Neck, N.Y. - The fourth-ranked St. Mary's College of Maryland coed sailing team finished fifth at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Coed Dinghy Championship (April 18-19) to earn a berth in the Inter-collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Eastern Semifinals hosted by MIT at Fan Pier in Boston on May 2-3. The Seahawks totaled 164 points in 26 completed races.
The top 8 teams qualified for the ICSA national semifinals so joining St. Mary's in Boston will be No. 2 Georgetown, No. 8 Navy, No. 9 Hobart & William Smith, No. 13 SUNY Maritime, No. 18 Old Dominion, No. 20 Washington (Md.), and Pennsylvania.
Sophomore Michael Menninger (Newport Beach, Calif.) skippered the B division boat to a second-place finish with junior crew Kelly Wilbur (Ipswich, Mass.) as the Seahawks tallied 36 points, a mere point behind Georgetown's Evan Aras and Caila Johnson.
In A division, junior skipper Jesse Kirkland (Warwick, Bermuda) finished 10th with crew Ted Hale (Jr./Annapolis, Md.) and Maddie Jackson (So./Bainbridge Island, Wash.), notching 128 points.
On Saturday, St. Mary's was seventh in the standings, two points behind Old Dominion for sixth. The Seahawks were second in the B divisions and 12th in the A division, two points behind Christopher Newport for 11th.
No. 2 Georgetown captured the America Trophy with 90 points, finishing first in the B division and second in the A division.
