St. Leonard, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team was able to seal the fifth-place spot Saturday morning at the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Cross Country Championships at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum in St. Leonard.
Senior captain Aidan Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) paced the race for the Seahawks who came in at 38th place (29 in scoring) out of 133 finishers. Hennessey came in with a time of 26:50, improving his time from when he ran the course back on September 19 for the Seahawks Invitational.
Junior Eric Ortiz (Rockville, Md./Magruder) trailed Hennessey and came in at 28:08, placing in 71st place (37 in scoring). The St. Mary's men came in quickly behind with senior Matt Flyr (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), taking 72nd (38 in scoring) by recording a time of 28:10.
Sophomore T.J. McPhaul (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was the fourth finisher for the Seahawks, collecting a 74th-place finish (40 in scoring) with a time of 28:17. St. Mary's last runner across the finish line was first-year James Judlick (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), the first time this season Judlick has scored for the Seahawks. He clinched a 74th-place finish (41 in scoring) with a time of 28:28.
The Captains of Christopher Newport University claimed the CAC championship title with a score of 27 and six runners in the Top 15. CNU was followed by York College of Pennsylvania in second who scored 48 points with seven runners in the Top 25. Salisbury University finished in third place with a team score of 65.
CNU's Grayson Reid, the 2014 CAC Rookie of the Year, notched the individual title after finishing sixth in last year's championship race. Reid completed the 8K course in 25:21.
The Seahawks will be back in action in two weeks on Saturday, November 14, competing at NCAA Division III Mideast Regionals at Big Spring High School in Newville, Pennsylvania.
