Frederick, Md. – Four Seahawks placed in the Top 30 as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team took third at the Hood College Open on Saturday morning. The 7.5K course was set through the Utica District Park.
The 10-team field was comprised of five NCAA Division III institutions, two Division II programs and three schools from the National Junior College Athletic Association. Washington and Jefferson College captured the team title with 37 points, besting Division II California University of Pennsylvania by 12 points. Gallaudet University's Otto Kingstedt won the individual title with a time of 24:31.4, beating his closest competitor by 42 seconds.
Senior team captain Aidan Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) posted a 13th-place finish (10 in scoring) with a time of 26:13.5 as Hennessey was a 1:42.1 behind Kingstedt. Junior Eric Ortiz (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was second for the Seahawks to cross the finish line as Ortiz finished 18th (15 in scoring) with a time of 26:48.0.
Sophomore T.J. McPhaul (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) notched a time of 26:59.6 to finish 21st (18 in scoring) for St. Mary's while senior Matt Flyr (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) got back to scoring for St. Mary's after missing last week's meet at DeSales University. Flyr came in 27th (24 in scoring) with a time of 27:20.5.
Rounding out the scoring for the Seahawks was sophomore Scott Zimmerman (Clarksville, Md./Atholton). Zimmerman tallied a time of 27:53.5 for a 31st-place finish (27 in scoring).
Today marked the end of the regular season for the Seahawks. St. Mary's will now spend the next two weeks preparing for the 2015 CAC Men's Cross Country Championships which the Seahawks will host on Saturday, October 31 at 11:30 a.m. at Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum in St. Leonard, Maryland.
