Galloway, N.J. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team snagged the number five overall team spot on Saturday morning at the Osprey Open hosted by Stockton University. The Seahawks competed in a 15-team field and averaged a team time of 28:49.86.
The Osprey Open featured 15 teams from NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III as well as schools from the National Junior College Athletic Association.
The Seahawks had a total of five participants that placed in the Top 50. Senior team captain Aidan Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) led St. Mary's and came in with a time of 28:16.46 for 23rd place (19 in team scoring). Following quickly after Hennessey was sophomore T.J. McPhaul (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) with a time of 28:23.71 in 24th place (20 in team scoring).
Both Hennessey and McPhaul saw improvement in their times since racing in the Second Annual Seahawks Invitational last weekend.
Junior Eric Ortiz (Rockville, Md./Magruder) came in 32nd place (24 in scoring) and senior Matt Flyr (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) placed 41st (31 in scoring) out of 145 runners. Ortiz crossed the finish line with a time of 28:47.99 while Flyr finished in 29:10.
St. Mary's tallied a team score of 133 and helping round out the score was sophomore Scott Zimmerman (Clarksville, Md./Atholton). Zimmerman seized the 50th spot (39 in scoring) with a time of 29:30.13.
Division II California University of Pennsylvania took control of the race and earned the No. 1 spot. California University had a total of four runners in the Top 5 for a team score of 20. The Vulcans were followed by host Stockton in second place with an average time of 27:22.14 and seven runners who landed times in the Top 20.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, October 10 at the DeSales University Invitational in Center Valley, Pa.
