Seahawk Men's Cross Country Showcases Teamwork, Finishes Third at York

York, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team raced to the finish and took third place overall at the Sixth Annual Coach Achtzehn Classic hosted by York College of Pennsylvania at John Rudy County Park in York.

Seahawk senior Aidan Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase [Md.]) set the pace for the team and finished 12th overall (10th for team scoring) with a time of 29:11.9. Junior Eric Ortiz (Rockville, Md./Magruder) followed suit and came in 29:45.4 for an 18th-place finish (12th in team scoring) for the Seahawks.

Close behind Ortiz were sophomore T.J. McPhaul (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in 22nd place (13th for team scoring) with a time of 30.11.8 and senior captain Matt Flyr (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) who came in 30:17.5 for 23rd place (14th in team scoring). Sophomore Scott Zimmerman (Columbia, Md./Atholton) rounded out the scoring with a 27th-place finish (17th in team scoring) in 30:49.7.

The Seahawks finished third in a race which included five teams and 59 runners. St. Mary's finished with a team time of 2:30:16.04. The race featured fellow Capital Athletic Conference foes York and Penn State Harrisburg as well as York alumni and Baltimore City Community College.

St. Mary's trailed behind the second-place team, York College Alumni, who owned a team time of 2:25:59.31. Wrapping up the race in first-place were the Spartans with a team time of 2:25:06.54. The Spartans garnered six runners in the Top 15 from sixth to 11th place. Overall winner, Ethan Rissell, who ran unattached, finished the 8K course with a time of 27:25.5.

The Seahawks will be back in action next Saturday, September 19, as they host the Second Annual Seahawk Invitational at Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum in St. Leonard, Maryland. Race begins at 9:30 a.m.
