Salisbury, Md. – Senior Aidan Hennessey (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase [Md.]) paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team Saturday morning to an eighth-place finish in the Seahawks' season-opening meet at the 19th Annual Salisbury University Fall Classic.
The 10-team field featured three Capital Athletic Conference opponents, Salisbury, Marymount (Va.) University, and Southern Virginia University as well as Division I U.S. Naval Academy, who is fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and Division II Pfeiffer University. Rowan University claimed the top team honor with 39 points while Navy's first-year Michael Karls bested all runners as Karls finished the 8K course in 26:07.88.
St. Mary's came in ahead of Southern Virginia, who finished 10th, with 198 points and two runners scoring in the top 40. As a team, the Seahawks averaged a finish time of 29:03.46.
Hennessey completed the course in 28:26.70 for 41st (32nd in scoring) as he was the first Seahawk to cross the finish line. Junior Eric Ortiz (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was next for St. Mary's as Ortiz posted a time of 28:48.84 for 49th (36th in scoring).
The next two to come in for the Seahawks were sophomore T.J. McPhaul (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and senior Matt Flyr (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake). McPhaul finished the race in 29:04.99 for 55th (41st in scoring) while Flyr ran a 29:25.45 for 61st (44th in scoring).
Rounding out the scoring for St. Mary's was senior Greg Mainolfi (Lutherville, Md./Towson) who came in 63rd (45th in scoring) with a time of 29:31.28.
The Seahawks return to action next Saturday, September 12 at the 6th Annual Coach Achtzehn Classic hosted by York College of Pennsylvania at John Rudy County Park. The race begins at 9:45 a.m.
