St. Mary's Competes at Sea Gull Opener
Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team opened up the 2010 campaign Saturday morning at the Sea Gull Opener hosted by Salisbury University, finishing seventh at the meet.
St. Mary's finished with 191 total points for its seventh-place finish amongst the nine-team field comprised of Division I Loyola (Md.) University, Division II Slippery Rock University, and seven Division III institutions.
Sophomore captain Nick Pasko (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall College) paced the Seahawks on the 8,000-meter course, placing 36th in 27:53. Next in line was first-year Matt Bennett (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) as Bennett crossed the finish line in 28:24 for 41st.
Slippery Rock nabbed the team title with 47 points while University of District of Columbia's Hilly Mugun captured the individual title in 25:43.
Following Pasko and Bennett across the finish line was first-year Ian Morgan (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson). Morgan finished 61st in 29:44. Senior Joe Smith (College Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) was the Seahawks' fourth finisher at 69th-place in 30:43 as Smith edged teammate, sophomore Quint Frauman (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake), by a second with Frauman placing 70th.
The Seahawks will return to action next Saturday, September 11 at the McDaniel College Cross Country Split Distance Challenge in Westminster. The race will begin at 9:40 am.
