2010 St. Mary’s College Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Team 24-Hour Run

DONATION FORM

Introduction
The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's and women's varsity cross country teams recently completed their first season of competition and our student-athletes are looking forward to becoming active participants in the St. Mary's College and St. Mary's County communities.  To further our goals, the men's and women's varsity cross country teams have partnered with the Southern Maryland Vacations for Vets to sponsor a 24-hour relay run from Friday, April 9, 2010 to Saturday, April 10, 2010.  The men's and women's cross country teams ask you to kindly consider making a donation for this event. Half of the proceeds generated through their fundraising efforts will be given to the Southern Maryland Vacations for Vets organization; the other half will be shared by the cross country teams.

Southern Maryland Vacations for Vets
Southern Maryland Vacations for Vets, an organization in the process of obtaining non-profit status, was started in 2007 when a group of citizens decided that there was a need to help our wounded service members get a break from the day-to-day hospital routine.  In 2008 and 2009, Vacations for Vets hosted eight events at Greenwell State Park for patients from Walter Reed, Ft. Meade, and the Baltimore VA and Washington VA Hospitals.  Each of the events included food, handicapped lodging, entertainment and transportation for the service members and their families.  In addition, other seasonal activities included kayaking, chartered fishing tours, pier fishing, boat tours, massages, facials and scrapbooking all for the benefit of those who served our country.  The funds donated to Southern Maryland Vacations for Vets help defray the costs associated with providing these weekend retreats.

St. Mary's College of Maryland Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams
The cross country teams are members of the Capital Athletic Conference and completed their inaugural seasons this past November.  During their first season, the teams and the individual student-athletes experienced tremendous success, highlighted by second-place finishes at the York College Invitational for both teams.  In addition, the men's and women's teams culminated the season with 4th and 5th  place finishes at the Conference championships, respectively, and competed in the 2009 Mideast Regional. While the student-athletes have excelled in competition, they are also dedicated to succeeding in the classroom and becoming active in community service.

The 24-Relay Run Event
The 15 members of the men's and women's cross country teams and the coaching staff will conduct a 24-hour run on the St. Mary's College of Maryland track, starting on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 5 pm and continuing through Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 5 pm.  During that time, there will always be one member of the team on the track with team members running alternating shifts of 30-60 minute intervals on the track.  The team will be tracking the total miles accumulated during the course of the run.  The team members and coaching staff will seek donations from family, friends and community members via a letter-writing campaign to raise money for the 24-hour relay run.
