St. Mary’s Men Have Strong Finish at Green Terror XC Challenge

Westminster, Md. - The inaugural season of the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team had a fast start Saturday morning as the Seahawks had a pair of runners finish in the top 15 at Green Terror Split Distance XC Challenge hosted by McDaniel College.

The Challenge featured two races - a 5K and an optional 3K.  St. Mary's finished fourth in the combined team scoring with a score of 149, besting Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Hood College, by 18 points.  The Seahawks average time in the 5K was 18:28.75.

Freshman Dan Swain (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) was the team's top finisher in both races.  Swain ran a 17:35 in the 5K to place ninth, while running a 10:14.94 to take 10th in the 3K.  St. Mary's next highest finisher was freshman Nick Pasko (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) as Pasko came in 11th in the 5K (17:42) and 13th in the 3K with a time of 10:23.00.

Rounding out the top three finishers was freshman Quint Frauman (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake).  Frauman took 33rd in the 5K in 19:07, while placing 35th in the 3K (11:17.79).

The Seahawks will return to action next Saturday, September 19 at the York (Pa.) College Spartan Invitational.  The 8K race will be held at John Rudy Park and will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The addition of men's and women's cross country this past spring brought St. Mary's athletic offerings to 17 sports.  Affiliated with NCAA Division III, St. Mary's became the ninth and final member institution of the Capital Athletic Conference to sponsor both men's and women's cross country.  The Seahawks joined Gallaudet University, Hood College, the University of Mary Washington, Marymount (Va.) University, Salisbury University, Stevenson University, Wesley College, and York (Pa.) College.
