Swain Third at Goucher Classic
Towson, Md. - Freshman Dan Swain (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) paced the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Goucher College Cross Country Classic Saturday morning.
Swain finished just under a minute off the winning pace set by U.S. Naval Academy's Brett Butler. Navy claimed the first two spots as Butler won the 8,000-meter race in 26:53.78 followed by teammate Richard Hoyt in 27:12.37. Swain notched a time of 27:45.63 to finish third out of 49 runners on Saturday, leading the team for a fourth week in a row.
The Seahawks missed a third-place finish by just one point as Goucher tallied 69 points, while St. Mary's totaled 70 points. The harriers averaged 30:18.17 for the race.
Freshman Nick Pasko (Bel Air, Md./Calvert Hall) placed in the top five as well as Pasko came in fifth with his time of 28:15.26, while freshman Quint Frauman (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) took 21st with a time of 30:20.45.
The Seahawks will return to action Saturday, October 17 at the Hood College Open at the Heritage Farm Park in Walkersville, Md. The race will begin at 10:00 am.
The addition of men's and women's cross country this past spring brought St. Mary's athletic offerings to 17 sports.
Affiliated with NCAA Division III, St. Mary's became the ninth and final member institution of the Capital Athletic Conference to sponsor both men's and women's cross country. The Seahawks joined Gallaudet University, Hood College, the University of Mary Washington, Marymount (Va.) University, Salisbury University, Stevenson University, Wesley College, and York (Pa.) College.
