Derek Sabedra will be venturing into his fifth season as the head men's and women's tennis coach in 2010-11 after taking over in August 2006.  Sabedra has guided both squads to a combined four appearances in the CAC semifinals while mentoring six Seahawks to eight All-CAC honors, including two first team selections in 2008.

Sabedra's teams have also excelled in the classroom, earning ITA All-Academic Team status since 2007-08 and having 19 Seahawks named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

Prior to his first stint as a collegiate head coach, Sabedra was the head coach at Great Mills HS from 2002 to 2006.  He led the Hornets to a 15-3 record in his last campaign, earning Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors.  Sabedra captured St. Mary's County Coach of the Year accolades in 2005 after mentoring Great Mills to a 12-5 mark.

He has held numerous coaching positions in the tri-county area.  Sabedra held two head coaching positions in basketball, leading the Great Mills boys basketball team in 2004 and The Calverton School Lady Cougars in 2005.  In 2000-01, he served as both the assistant boys lacrosse and girls basketball coach at Great Mills.

Currently living in Huntingtown, Sabedra is employed within the St. Mary's County Public Schools system as a behavioral specialist.

Sabedra continues to promote the sport of tennis in St. Mary's County and currently serves as secretary of the St. Mary's County Tennis Association (SMCTA) as well as the co-coordinator for St. Mary's County Juniors Tennis charged with organizing junior leagues throughout the year.  He helped coach the SMCTA U-18 Junior Team to their first-ever United States Tennis Association Junior Team Maryland State Championship on July 18, 2010. 

A 1987 graduate of Calvert HS, Sabedra received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1992.  He later earned his master's degree from Bowie State University in 2000.
