Gear Becomes First Seahawk to Nab CAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year Award

York, Pa. – Fresh off earning St. Mary's College of Maryland Male Athlete of the Year honors last night, Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) was announced as the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Co-Player of the Year Thursday morning as this year's All-CAC teams were announced by league commissioner, Tom Byrnes.

Gear, who was the first Seahawk to ever earn CAC Rookie of the Year honors in 2011, now becomes the first St. Mary's player to garner the conference's top honor since the first Player of the Year award was given in 1991.

The 2010-11 CAC Rookie of the Year, Gear is a three-time conference all-star, having earned first team honors as a first-year and now two consecutive second team nods. The 6-3 junior captain picked up second team honors at No. 1 singles for the second year in a row. He notched a team-best 16 wins to post a 16-5 record for his junior campaign, including a 3-1 mark in conference play. Gear closed out the year on an 11-match win streak.

Already the school's all-time leader in singles wins, Gear registered his 50th career singles victory with a straight-set triumph against Goucher College on April 3. He currently boasts a three-year record of 56-11, including a 32-8 log in No. 1 singles action.

The Seahawks (11-8, 2-2 CAC) registered at least 10 wins for the fifth consecutive season. St. Mary's entered this year's league tournament as the No. 3 seed and made its third straight CAC semifinal appearance.
