St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team won their fifth consecutive match Wednesday afternoon as the Seahawks remained unbeaten at home with a 7-2 non-conference win over the Goucher College Gophers.
Juniors John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) and J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) teamed up to give the Seahawks (8-5) a 1-0 lead with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. First-years Robert Bishop (Hollywood, Md./Great Mills) and Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) followed suit with an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles for a 2-0 margin.
Goucher (3-9) cut the lead to 2-1 with an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles as first-year Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and junior David Spivey (Cockeysville, Md./Park) picked up the win over the tandem of junior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster).
The loss snapped a 12-match win streak for Gear and Hardesty, who had not lost since an 8-0 shutout at the hands of Johns Hopkins University at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regionals on September 29–October 1.
Straight-set victories by Paulishak, Gear, and Feighner in singles action put St. Mary's up by a 5-1 margin. It was Gear's fifth straight win and he is now one win shy of collecting his 50th career singles win.
Spivey was the Gophers' only double winner as he posted a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Hardesty at No. 2 singles.
Bishop and Guzzone wrapped up the win for the Seahawks with singles wins at No. 6 and No. 4, respectively. The win extended Guzzone's win streak to four straight, giving him a team-best 10 singles wins.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 when St. Mary's welcomes Frostburg State University to the Somerset Tennis Complex for a Capital Athletic Conference match at 2:00 pm.
