St. Mary's Men's Tennis Falls at No. 21 Mary Washington

Fredericksburg, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team opened up the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference season with an 8-1 loss to No. 21 University of Mary Washington Sunday afternoon.

Junior Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and his partner, first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster), picked up the only point for the Seahawks (3-3, 0-1 CAC) at No. 1 doubles. Gear and Hardesty notched an 8-2 win over the duo of junior Alex Blakhin (Moscow, Russia) and first-year David Lunding-Johansson (Stockholm, Sweden).

Gear and Hardesty now own an 8-2 overall record and have won seven straight.

Junior J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) played the closest singles match for St. Mary's as Guzzone took first-year Marcel Rengifo to a third-set tiebreaker. He posted a 7-6 (7-5) triumph in the first set before Rengifo tallied a 6-4 win in the second to force the tiebreaker. Rengifo finished out the match with a 10-5 edge in the tiebreaker.

The Seahawks will be back in action next Sunday, February 24 when St. Mary's travels to Newport News, Virginia to take on future CAC member, Christopher Newport University. Match starts at 1:00 pm.
