Seahawk Men's Tennis Drops One at Christopher Newport

Newport News, Va. – Junior captain Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) won twice for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team Sunday afternoon as the Seahawks fell 7-2 to future Capital Athletic Conference member, Christopher Newport University, who is ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region.

Gear's first win came in doubles action as he partnered with first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) for a grueling 9-8 (7-3) win at No. 1 doubles over first-year Chiraag Shetty (Yorktown, Va.) and senior Kyle Tobin (Warrenton, Va.). Gear and Hardesty improve to 9-2 on the season and have won eight straight.

Gear then came up with another hard-fought triumph at No. 1 singles, posting a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 victory over Shetty.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Friday, March 8 when St. Mary's travels to Chestertown, Maryland to face Washington College, who is ranked 11th in the region, in non-conference action at 3:00 pm.
