St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team defeated Susquehanna University, 8-1, in the home opener for the Seahawks. St. Mary's (2-2) swept doubles play, dropping only four games.
Junior Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) rebounded from a tough outing at the University of the District of Columbia to collect his 42nd career singles victory with a straight set victory (6-1, 6-0) over senior Michael Hickey (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) at No. 1 singles.
Gear earlier in the day teamed up with first-year Mark Hardesty (Westminster, Md./Westminster) for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, defeating Hickey and sophomore Garrett Lynn (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury).
Senior Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) battled from a set down to win over senior Mats Haaland (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) in three at No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
Feeley and junior John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) teamed up for an 8-2 triumph over Haaland and first-year Ian Endresen (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) at No. 2 doubles.
Feighner collected a straight set victory, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles over Endresen. Junior Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) registered a 6-1, 6-3 victory over senior Kevin Schneider (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) at No. 6 singles.
Guzzone and first-year Wyatt Paulishak (Frederick, Md./Middletown) defeated the doubles team of Schneider and senior Scott Rodd (West Harford, Conn./Conrad), 8-1, in third flight action.
Paulishak notched a double-bagel victory over Rodd in No. 6 singles play.
The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday, October 13 when St. Mary's travels to future Capital Athletic Conference member, Penn State Harrisburg. Match starts at 2:00 pm.
