Washington, D.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team battled to a 5-4 loss at Catholic University of America before dropping a 7-0 decision at Division II University of the District of Columbia Thursday afternoon.
The Seahawks (1-2) started singles action down 2-1 as senior Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and junior John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) picked up the team's only doubles win with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles over seniors Kyle Kramer (Chester Springs, Pa.) and Schuyler Hayward (Bay Shore, N.Y.).
Feeley then earned a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles over Kramer while Feighner notched a 6-3, 6-4 win over junior Joe Peters (Newtown, Pa.) at the fourth singles flight.
The fourth point of the match for St. Mary's came via a default win for junior Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) at No. 1 singles.
No. 1 and No. 3 doubles were not completed at the District of the Columbia match while the UDC Firebirds (2-0) rolled through wins at No. 2 doubles and in singles action to remain undefeated on the young season.
The Seahawks will return to action Saturday, September 29 as St. Mary's begins competition at the ITA Division III Southeast Regional Championship hosted by the University of Mary Washington.
