Drew Miller Becomes Next St. Mary's Tennis Coach
St. Mary's City, Md. – It was announced Monday by Scott Devine, St. Mary's College of Maryland Director of Athletics & Recreation, that Drew Miller would be the next head coach of the men's and women's tennis programs effective immediately.
Devine stated, "It is my pleasure to announce Drew as our next head men's and women's tennis coach. Drew's 19 years of coaching experience will serve him well as he takes the reins of two of our up-and-coming programs. I am excited to see what the short and long term future of both of our tennis programs will look like under Coach Miller's leadership.
Drew's career has taken him to some outstanding academic and athletic institutions, which makes him a strong fit here at St. Mary's College. He knows how to recruit, how to teach and train college athletes, and how to administer a college level athletic program on a day-to-day basis. We all welcome Drew and his family to the Seahawk athletic department and look forward to working with him to keep these two programs moving in a positive direction."
Miller's tennis experience includes serving as an instructor and team coach at Courts Plus in Elmhurst, Ill. While at Courts Plus, he worked with junior high and high school teams and taught group and private lessons to all ages and levels.
He owns a successful high school playing record, including winning the 1998 South Regional Championship singles title in Colorado Springs, Colo. as a sophomore at Cheyenne Mountain High School and being part of the first doubles team to make it to the Ohio State High School Tournament from Hudson High School (Ohio). Miller was a three-time MVP as well as the No. 1 singles player at Western Reserve Academy (Ohio).
"Thank you to Scott, Shawne, and the search committee for their time and consideration. I am excited to become a Seahawk and lead the tennis program. The program is already in good shape with some outstanding student-athletes," expressed Miller. "I am eager to get to work and enhance their tennis games with the goal of winning a CAC championship, and recruit great all-around young women and men to represent Seahawk tennis off and on the court."
Miller comes to St. Mary's after a five-year run as the head men's basketball coach at NCAA Division III Schreiner University (Kerrville, Texas) of the American Southwest Conference. He led the Mountaineers to unprecedented success on and off the floor in his five seasons at the helm, including the record-setting 2011-12 campaign as SU notched their first-ever ASC playoff berth and best record (13-12) since Schreiner joined Division III in 1999.
He has over 10 years of NCAA Division III coaching experience as Miller has made assistant basketball coaching stops at Hiram College (Hiram, Ohio), Lynchburg College (Lynchburg, Va.), Southwestern University (Georgetown, Texas), and Trinity University (San Antonio, Texas). He has coached internationally as well at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
Miller graduated in 1995 from Kenyon College (Gambier, Ohio) with a bachelor of arts in psychology. He then earned a master of science in education (sport science/coaching) from the University of Akron in December 2002.
