Guzzone Picked as St. Mary’s April Athlete of the Month

St. Mary's City, Md. – J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team was named the St. Mary's Athlete of the Month for the month of April as selected by the Department of Athletics and Recreation.

Guzzone garnered the monthly honor after helping the Seahawks to a 5-2 record, including an undefeated 5-0 conference mark, during April.  He posted a 6-1 record at No. 6 singles as well as a 4-3 mark at No. 3 doubles.

Half of his six singles wins were straight-set victories while partnering up with sophomore John Feighner (Laurel, Md./Atholton) for all but one doubles match.

The biggest win for the 5-11 sophomore was on April 13 when Guzzone notched a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) triumph over Salisbury University's Demetri Vrahnos to give St. Mary's a 5-4 victory over Salisbury during the regular season.

He finished the 2011-12 campaign with a 20-4 (6-1 CAC) singles record and a 15-6 (5-2 CAC) in doubles action.
