Seahawk Men's Tennis Back in Win Column

Dover, Del. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team rebounded from Sunday's loss to NCAA Division II Davis & Elkins College with Wednesday's 8-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over the host Wesley College Wolverines.

Wednesday's win marks the 14th of the season for the Seahawks, besting last year's school record of 13 wins in a season.

St. Mary's (14-3, 3-1 CAC) started off with a 2-0 advantage as the Seahawks easily captured No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, dropping only one set between the two matches.  Wesley (3-3, 0-3 CAC) cut the lead to one with an 8-4 win at the third flight.

The Seahawks then cruised in singles action, claiming straight set victories in all but two matches.  Sophomore J. Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) posted a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 triumph over junior Kevin Mangini (Mount Holly, N.J./Rancocas Valley) at No. 6 singles.

Senior Elliot Russell (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) registered his first win of the season in his first match of the year, notching a 6-1, 4-6, 11-9 victory over sophomore Andrew Crews (Philadelphia, Pa./Floyd E. Kellam) at No. 5 singles.

Junior Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), the Seahawks' newest member of the double-digit singles wins club, tallied a 6-0, 6-1 win over senior Cochise Lucas (Hyattsville, Md./Parkdale) at the No. 2 flight to improve to 11-6 on the season.

The Seahawks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 10 as St. Mary's welcomes York College of Pennsylvania to the Somerset Tennis Complex in conference action at 3:30 pm.
