Seahawk Men’s Tennis Blanks Hood, Gear Sets Single-Season Record
Frederick, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team clinched the fourth seed in the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Championship Tournament as the Seahawks blanked Hood College, 7-0, Friday afternoon in the final conference match of the season.
St. Mary's (10-8, 5-2 CAC) win over Hood actually forced a three-way tie for second with Salisbury University and York College of Pennsylvania, necessitating a coin-flip to break to deadlock. The Seahawks lost the coin-flip to be the 'odd man out' and garnered the fourth seed. Salisbury secured the No. 2 seed by virtue of their 9-0 win over York, leaving the Spartans as the third seed.
The five conference wins in 2011 is the most by any Seahawk men's tennis squad in program history.
The Seahawks welcome fifth-seeded Frostburg State University to the Somerset Tennis Complex for CAC first round action on Sunday, April 17 at 3:00 pm. During the regular-season, St. Mary's notched a 7-2 win over FSU.
First-year Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) set a school single-season record with his 16th dual-meet singles victory of the year. Gear tallied an 8-3 victory over senior Mike Hardman (Bowie, Md./Bowie) at No. 2 singles to surpass current assistant coach Kenny Nugent '10 mark of 15 set in 2008-09.
Gear is now 16-1 on the season and is perfect in league action with a 7-0 record.
The tandem of Gear and sophomore Arvin Wong (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) needed a tiebreaker set to finish with a 6-1 conference record in doubles action as Wong/Gear posted a 9-8 (7-5) triumph over Hood's duo of Hardman and junior Carter Reitman (Frederick, Md.) at No. 1 doubles.
First-year Jay Guzzone (Columbia, Md./Hammond) notched the team's second-best 13th singles victory with an 8-0 shutout of sophomore Travis Kline (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) at the fourth singles flight. Guzzone is now 13-5 overall and 7-0 conference action as well.
