Seahawks Rebound with Sweep of Lincoln (PA)
Lincoln, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team rebounded from yesterday's shutout loss to No. 22 University of Mary Washington and snapped their four-match losing skid by blanking Division II Lincoln (Pa.) University, 9-0, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.
Stepping on the court for the first time this season, senior Yuri Soussov (Moscow, Russia) registered his first career wins as Soussov teamed up with first-year Chip Compton (Havre de Grace, Md./Tome) for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles and then nabbed a 6-1, 6-3 victory over red-shirt first-year Richard Oberton at No. 6 singles.
Compton and sophomore Elliott Russell (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) also picked up their first career victories as Russell partnered with first-year Kyle Feeley (Baltimore, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles followed by a 6-0, 7-6 (10-8) triumph over junior Alfayo Michira at No. 4 singles. Compton posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over senior Darius Gregory at the No. 5 flight.
St. Mary's hopes to carry this momentum into its Capital Athletic Conference first-round match at third-seeded York (Pa.) College on Sunday, April 18 at 1:30 pm as the Seahawks are the No. 6 seed.
