Seahawks Edge Division II UDC, 5-4, behind Barnes Win
Washington, D.C. – Senior Drew Barnes (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) notched a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles over junior Karlon Bernard (Scarborough, Trinidad & Tobago/Scarborough Secondary) to lift the St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s tennis team to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Division II University of the District of Columbia Wednesday afternoon.
The Seahawks (9-5) captured two straight singles flights at No. 5 and No. 3 to overcome a 4-2 deficit and knot the match at 4-all.
UDC entered singles action with a 2-1 margin after posting doubles win at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights. Barnes teamed up with junior Jeff Levy (Rockville, Md./T.S. Wootton) to record St. Mary’s only doubles win – an 8-3 victory over Bernard and senior Daniel Gourdine (Silver Spring, Md./Blake).
St. Mary’s will be back in action this Saturday, April 3 as the Seahawks return to Capital Athletic Conference play with a match at Stevenson University at 12:00 pm.
