Seahawks Hand Virginia Wesleyan 6-3 Setback
Virginia Beach, Va. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team continued its winning ways at the Virginia Wesleyan College Beach Shootout Saturday morning with a 6-3 victory over the host.
Seniors Sam Barton (Edgewater, Md./Key) and Kenny Nugent (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) each posted a 2-0 mark for the match as they each captured their singles match and then teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles.
Barton notched a hard-fought 1-6, 6-1, 11-9 victory over freshman Zak Bartley (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) at No. 3 singles, while Nugent tallied a gut-wrenching 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 10-5 win over sophomore Jamie Griffin (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) at the No. 4 singles flight.
St. Mary's will be back in action later this afternoon in its final match of the VWC Beach Shootout against Southern Virginia University at 3:00 pm.
