St. Marys Notches Second Straight Win
St. Mary's City, Md. - Juniors Sam Barton (Edgewater, Md./Key) and Kenny Nugent (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) led the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team to its second straight victory as the Seahawks knocked off their second consecutive NCAA Division II opponent, the University of the District of Columbia, 7-2, Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Seahawks (5-2) swept all three doubles matches to own a 3-0 advantage heading into singles action. Seniors Jeremy Butanis (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Andrew MacLaughlin (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-S. Dorchester) picked up their second straight doubles win at No. 1 with an 8-1 victory over Arda Kaytan and Daniel Gourdine. The tandem of Barton and Nugent also won their second straight at No. 2 with an 8-3 triumph over Adrian Wyllie and Karlon Bernard.
Barton claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Gourdine to improve to 5-2 on the season with his second win in a row, while Nugent won 8-0 over Eric Johnson at No. 5 singles for his second straight win as well and a 5-2 singles record on the season.
St. Mary's will return to action tomorrow when the Seahawks host Lancaster Bible College at noon.
