St. Marys Mens Tennis Selected as an ITA All-Academic Team
Skillman, N.J. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team was selected as one of the 35 Division III programs to earn 2009 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team status. The Seahawks also had six players named as an ITA Scholar-Athlete.
The St. Mary's men were the only Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) team to be selected as an ITA All-Academic Team.
The ITA All-Academic Team Award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1. be a varsity letter winner, 2. have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3. have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
The Seahawks posted a 3.49 GPA during the 2008-09 season. St. Mary's finished this past season with an 11-10 (1-5 CAC) record, while rising senior Kenny Nugent (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) earned All-CAC second team honors after a record-setting 15-5 singles record.
Graduated players Jeremy Butanis (Fallston, Md./Fallston), Brett Hermans (Exeter, N.H./Exeter), and Andrew MacLaughlin (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge-South Dorchester); rising seniors Nugent and Drew Barnes (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial); and rising sophomore Elliot Russell (Freeport, Maine/Freeport) represented St. Mary's as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Butanis, Hermans and MacLaughlin all repeated as ITA Scholar-Athletes for the second consecutive year.
