Four More Team Records Tumble as CAC Championship Meet Comes to a Close
St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team continued to rewrite the Seahawk annals as four more school records were demolished on the final day of competition of the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Men's & Women's Swimming Championships Sunday night. The Seahawks have achieved 11 school records over the three-day event.
Notching five school records and one gold medal over the weekend, sophomore Cameron Hedquist (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) was voted the CAC Men's Swimming Rookie of the Year.
St. Mary's thirteen-year head coach Andre Barbins picked up his fourth CAC Coach of the Year award but first-ever on the men's side. Barbins was voted the CAC Women's Swim Coach of the Year in 2004, 2008 and 2009.
For the third straight year, St. Mary's finished as the third team in the conference meet with 499 points. However, the Seahawks have narrowed the gap between them and second-place York (Pa.) College. Last season, SMCM was 274 points out of second but was only 54.5 points shy this year.
Sophomore Billy DeBoissiere (Columbia, Md./Atholton) now holds both breaststroke records at SMCM as DeBoissiere captured the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:08.51, besting Alexander Klose '04 mark of 2:10.07 (2002).
First-year Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) had a solid swim for the Seahawks in the 200 breaststroke as well, finishing third in 2:10.86.
Senior captain Jackson Webb (Valley Lee, Md./Leonardtown) added two more records to his resume as Webb finally broke the top three in the 200 butterfly with a second-place finish. He touched the wall in a school record 1:56.06, surpassing his own record of 1:58.22 from last year's CAC championship meet.
The Seahawks nabbed a second-place finish in the 400 free relay in record fashion as the quartet of Webb, DeBoissiere, Petersen and Hedquist put forth a time of 3:10.73 to break the previous record of 3:14.75 set by three of tonight's members in December.
The second oldest standing Seahawk record – the 100 freestyle – was knocked down by Hedquist as he finished third in the event. With his time of 47.21, Hedquist edged the previous mark by .50. Nick Stamnos '01 set the previous record of 47.71 in 1999.
University of Mary Washington found its 17th overall and 11th straight conference title while senior Stephen Clendenin (Ashburn, Va.) garnered his third straight CAC Men's Swimmer of the Year award. Mary Washington notched two championship meet records, two conference records and two NCAA 'B' cut on the night.
