St. Mary's Men's Swimming Shatters Five School Records
St. Mary's City, Md. – It was a stellar night for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team as the Seahawks crushed five school records and medaled in six of seven events during the second day of the 2011 Capital Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Swimming Championships Saturday night. St. Mary's is inching closer to second place, remaining in third with 345 points by only 28 points off the pace.
The first school record of the night came in the 400 individual medley as first-year Thor Petersen (Germantown, Md./Northwest) finished second in the event with a 4:12.50 pace, shattering Chris Goodman '04 10-year old mark of 4:17.57.
The next school record came in the next event as senior captain Jackson Webb (Valley Lee, Md./Leonardtown) registered his third school record of the weekend in the 100 butterfly. After finishing third last season, Webb placed second in the event in 52.24. For the second night in a row, he has broken a record held by current assistant coach Julio Zarate '04. Zarate held the record (53.23) for nine years.
In the very next event, sophomore Cameron Hedquist (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) set a school record in the 200 freestyle as Hedquist captured the event in 1:42.83, breaking his own mark of 1:43.58 from back in December.
Sophomore Billy DeBoissiere (Columbia, Md./Atholton) continued the trend with a school record in the 100 breaststroke as DeBoissiere finished second after a third-place finish last season. DeBoissiere posted a time of 58.68 to strike his own mark of 59.21 from November 21, 2009.
The final school record came in the 800 freestyle relay as the foursome of Hedquist, DeBoissiere, Petersen, and Webb trampled their own record by over eight seconds to claim second in the event with a 7:02.16. When the quartet had set the record of 7:10.26 back in December, they crushed a two-year mark by nearly nine seconds.
The 200 medley relay of senior captain Nico Pinto (Lima, Peru), DeBoissiere, Petersen, and senior Gabe Grace (Baltimore, Md./Tech) just missed a school record by .27 as the foursome finished third in 1:39.60.
Other highlights featured NCAA provisional times by University of Mary Washington's 200 medley and 800 free relays and UMW's junior William Norfolk (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly). Mary Washington senior Stephen Clendenin (Ashburn, Va.) recorded a championship meet record in the 100 backstroke with an NCAA 'B' cut.
University of Mary Washington seems to have its 11th straight title in hand as the Eagles boast 666 points for first place after capturing six of seven events tonight.
