St. Mary's Swimming Announces 2010-11 Captains and Schedule
St. Mary's City, Md. – Andre Barbins, the head men's and women's swimming coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland, announced the team captains and schedule for the 2010-11 campaign at last Sunday's team banquet as the Seahawks celebrated the accomplishments from this past season. The team captains will be Erin Cammarata (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Nico Pinto (Lima, Peru/FDR-Winston Churchill American School of Lima), Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), and Jackson Webb (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown).
When announcing next year's schedule, Barbins stated that the Michael P. O'Brien ARC Aquatic Center will serve as the host site of the Capital Athletic Conference swimming championships for the sixth year in a row.
Pinto, who specializes in the backstroke and
breaststroke, and Webb, a butterfly and individual
medley specialist, will be two-year team captains and have helped
the Seahawks to back-to-back third-place finishes at the Capital
Athletic Conference championships.
Sharing co-MVP honors with Billy DeBoissiere (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Webb holds two school records in the 200 butterfly and the 200 free relay while being a six-time All-CAC honoree. Pinto is an all-conference selection in the 200 medley relay.
Cammarata, a freestyle specialist, and
Sokolove, who specializes in the breaststroke and
IM events, have guided St. Mary's to three consecutive
second-place finishes at the CAC championships.
Sokolove has garnered 11 All-CAC awards throughout her three-year career, being a four-time CAC champion in the 200 and 400 medley relays.
The 2010 CAC Rookie of the Year, Kelly Heyde (Wilton, Conn./Wilton), and three-time NCAA qualifier, Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis), were named co-MVPs for the women's squad while Chelsea Gulliver (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Logan Riley (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) were both presented with the Dave Hayes '98 Team Award^.
The 2010-11 schedule features eight dual meets (seven for the men) while the Seahawks will tangle with nationally-ranked powerhouses, University of Mary Washington and Johns Hopkins University.
St. Mary's kicks off the campaign at the end of October with back-to-back home meets against Catholic University (Oct. 29) and Marymount (Va.) University (Oct. 30).
The women start off November by taking on Randolph-Macon College (Nov. 5) in Ashland, Virginia before hosting a tri-meet (with the men) with Gallaudet University and Goucher College the next day. St. Mary's will then travel to York (Pa.) College for a quad meet with York, Dickinson College, and Susquehanna University on November 13. The squad will head into the Thanksgiving break with a home meet with Washington (Md.) College (Nov. 20).
The only action in December will be the Franklin & Marshall College Invitational on the 4th and 5th followed the team's winter training trip in Florida from January 4 to 13.
After their training trip, the Seahawks jump right back into the thick of things with a league meet at Mary Washington (Jan. 14), the defending CAC champions on both sides. The following weekend, St. Mary's takes on Johns Hopkins (Jan. 21) and Salisbury University (Jan. 22). The Seahawks end the regular-season with a meet at the conference's newest member, Frostburg State University (Jan. 29), before heading into the CAC championships.
