St. Marys Performs Well in Ocean Mile Swim
Delray Beach, Fla. – As is customary on their annual training trip in Florida, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland men’s and women’s swimming teams competed in the annual Delray Beach Ocean Mile Swim.
Though the water temperature was a mild 73 degrees, 159 swimmers had to endure chilly air temps of just below 50 degrees. The top male at the event claimed first in 23:17 while the top female won the event in 25:42.
MEN’S
HIGHLIGHTS
First-year Billy DeBoissiere
(Columbia, Md./Atholton) was the Seahawks’ top male finisher
in the event, coming in 22nd overall in 26:55 while ranking sixth
in his age group. Junior captain Jackson
Webb (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) was next in 24th place
while sophomore Joe Kelly (Ellicott City, Md./Mt.
Hebron) placed 46th.
WOMEN’S
HIGHLIGHTS
First-year Kelly Heyde (Wilton,
Conn./Wilton) had a strong showing for St. Mary’s, finishing
11th overall in 25:49. Heyde was third
overall among the women and second in her age group.
Junior captain Sofia Sokolove (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) placed 51st while senior Rachel Hotchko (Yakima, Wash./A.C. Davis) was 55th.
The Seahawks will return home Wednesday and quickly dive back in as St. Mary’s hosts nationally-ranked University of Mary Washington in Capital Athletic Conference action this Saturday, January 16 at 1:00.
