Arlington, Va. – First-year forward Zach Fontenot (Middletown, Md./Middletown) propelled the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Marymount (Va.) University Saturday night in the Capital Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Following a scoreless first half, Fontenot finally broke through the Marymount defense at 68:27 with his second goal of the season.
The Saints (4-6, 0-1 CAC) picked up two corner kicks and put two shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of the contest but senior captain Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) and the St. Mary's defense stood up to the challenge, making two late saves to preserve the 1-0 shutout win.
Brown finished the contest with six saves for his second shutout of the season while sophomore Logan Cropper (Oak Hill, Va.) made two stops in the Saint loss.
Marymount notched a 10-7 advantage in shots for the game, including a 6-2 margin in the first half. The Saints also posted a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
St. Mary's (3-4-2) will look to extend its unbeaten streak to four matches on Wednesday, October 2nd when the Seahawks travel to Dover, Delaware to face Wesley College in another conference tilt at 7:00 pm.
