Braun Lifts Seahawk Men's Soccer to Win at Ferrum
Ferrum, Va. – Sophomore forward Matt Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) scored the second of his two goals 29 seconds into overtime to help the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team stage a 3-2 come-from-behind non-conference win over Ferrum College on a rainy Monday afternoon.
Braun made quick work of the overtime as he found the back of the net with the only shot of the extra period for the 'golden goal.'
St. Mary's (4-7) scored three unanswered goals in the final 45 minutes en route to the victory as Ferrum (4-6-1) had staked a 2-0 halftime lead.
Sophomore Eddy Funes (Sterling, Va.) put the Panthers on the scoreboard nearly 20 minutes into the match as Funes finished a feed from junior Asa Fox (Sterling, Va.) for the 1-0 Ferrum lead at 17:44. Junior Aaron Gustine (Woodbridge, Va.) gave the Panthers a two-goal cushion at 34:55 with an unassisted tally for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Seahawks scored twice in a 1:14-minute span within the first five minutes of the second half to draw even and force overtime.
Braun tallied his first goal of the day at 48:33 to close the gap to one before senior midfielder Frank VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar) knotted the contest at 2-2 at 49:47 with his fourth goal of the season on a pass from fellow classmate Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg).
The offense for both sides was even in terms of shots as Ferrum edged the visitors, 17-14, but the Panthers dominated corner kicks with a 12-6 advantage, including a 10-3 margin in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nate Ramsland (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) collected seven saves to record his second career win in goal for the Seahawks. First-year Justin Robinson (Front Royal, Va.) notched four stops in the loss.
St. Mary's will return to the pitch on Saturday, October 6 when the Seahawks welcome Frostburg State University to Seahawk Stadium for Capital Athletic Conference action at 3:30 pm on Hawktoberfest at Family Weekend.
