Seahawk Men's Soccer Drops CAC Opener
Arlington, Va. – Sophomore midfielder Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen) netted the lone goal for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team as the Seahawks dropped a 2-1 decision in their Capital Athletic Conference opener at Marymount (Va.) University Saturday afternoon.
Marymount (2-2-2, 1-0-0 CAC) picked up the game-winning goal with 1:24 remaining in regulation as junior midfielder Onar Yousefi (McLean, Va.) scored off a free kick.
St. Mary's (2-5, 0-1 CAC) controlled the tempo of the first half with an 8-5 shot advantage as well as a 2-0 corner kick margin. The Seahawks drew first blood at 4:10 as senior captain Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) slid a pass through the middle of the Saint defense before Kalama collected the ball and beat junior goalkeeper Mike Madigan (Bristow, Va.) to the right.
The Saints took over in the second half, owning an 8-3 margin in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, as Marymount began to knock on the door.
The Seahawks held on to their 1-0 advantage until the 72nd minute when sophomore midfielder Reid McKee (Gainesville, Va.) collected a slide pass from the front of the goal and beat junior keeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) to the far side. Sophomores J.C. Cabrera (Lorton, Va.) and Jorge Alvarado (Reston, Va.) assisted on the equalizing goal.
Brown finished the match with two saves while Madigan registered five stops in the Saints' win.
Marymount edged the Seahawks 13-11 in shots and 6-4 in corner kicks.
St. Mary's hopes to turn back its four-game skid on Tuesday, September 18 when the Seahawks welcome Catholic University of America (3-3) to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 4:00 pm.
