Stevenson Holds on for 2-1 CAC Victory
Owings Mills, Md. - A score in each half provided Stevenson University with a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Saturday afternoon.
Stevenson (5-4, 1-1 CAC) got on the scoreboard first as freshman midfielder Ansger Otto (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) connected on a cross from the left from sophomore defender Sam Bryant (Burlington Twp., N.J./Burlington Twp.) for his team-leading fifth goal of the season at 8:27.
With the Mustang defense holding St. Mary's (3-6, 1-3 CAC) to just three shots, Stevenson maintained its 1-0 lead at halftime.
Sophomore forward Kyle Baker (Mitchellville, Md./Bowie) gave the home team a 2-0 advantage at 55:11 as Baker converted on a penalty kick.
The Seahawks cut the lead to 2-1 at 69:56 when sophomore forward Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) notched his team-leading fifth goal of the season off an assist by freshman midfielder Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg).
St. Mary's mounted an offensive in the second half as the Seahawks rattled off nine shots to finish with 12, while Stevenson recorded 20. The Mustangs posted a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) notched nine saves and gave up one goal in the victory, while the Seahawks' junior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) had six stops and allowed two goals.
St. Mary's will return to action next Tuesday, September 29 as the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to square off against Catholic University in a non-conference tilt at 4:00 pm.
