Payne Selected as Co-CAC Men’s Soccer Player-of-the-Week

York, Pa. - Freshman Brian Payne (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) of the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team earned his first selection as the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Men's Soccer Player-of-the-Week as announced by conference commissioner, Tom Byrnes.  Payne garners the weekly honor for the week ending October 19.

Payne shares this week's honor with York (Pa.) College's Jon Ports, who tallied a goal and an assist in York's 4-0 win over the University of Mary Washington.

The 5-7, midfielder scored the game-winning goal in both of St. Mary's victories last week, including the win that clinched a CAC playoff berth for the Seahawks (5-6-4, 3-2-2 CAC).

He started off the week with the game-winner in a 3-0 shutout of an improved Gallaudet University squad, marking his first collegiate goal.  Payne followed that up by assisting on the first goal, then netting the game-winning goal with 2:33 remaining in the game as SMCM recorded a 2-1 non-conference win at Randolph-Macon College.

Payne is now fifth on the team in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists.

St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday, October 21 as the Seahawks welcome the regionally-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport University for a non-conference tilt at 3:00 in Seahawk Stadium.  CNU, who received votes in this week's national poll, is currently ranked fourth in the NSCAA South Region.
