Swarthmore, Pa. – Junior midfielder Matt Tarrant (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana) tallied a career-best six points in leading the No. 14 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to an impressive 21-5 non-conference win over Drew University Saturday afternoon. The game was played at Swarthmore College as Drew's field was still covered in snow.
Tarrant finished the day with a career-high five goals and one assist while senior attacker Stew D'Ambrogi (Severna Park, Md./Severn) collected his first career hat trick. First-year attackman Patrick Regan (Wilmington, N.C./Cape Fear) contributed two goals and two assists while junior midfielder Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton) chipped in a pair and an assist.
The Seahawks (2-1) opened up the game with a three-goal first period as Tarrant scored twice in giving his team a 3-0 lead after one. St. Mary's continued to roll in the second quarter, outscoring the Drew Rangers (1-1), 10-1, as the Seahawks stretched their lead to 7-0 before DU finally got on the scoreboard at 7:08. St. Mary's closed out the half on a 6-0 run for a 13-1 halftime advantage.
Five different Rangers found the back of the net while seniors Mark Barus (Jacobstown, N.J.) and Mike Marone (Morristown, N.J.) each added an assist.
Scoring in the third and fourth stanzas was identical as St. Mary's posted a 4-2 margin in each period. From 6:41 in the second quarter to 5:15 in the third stanza, the Seahawks netted nine goals in a row. Tarrant and senior midfielder Cody Tidwell (Cordova, Md./South River) each found the back of the net in a seven-second span to start the fourth.
St. Mary's doubled up on Drew in shots, 53-26, while earning the edge in ground balls, 39-30. Face-offs went to the Rangers who posted 17-of-30 at the X. Tidwell went 13-of-23 at the face-off position with a game- and career-best nine ground balls.
Defensively, senior captain David Mitchell-McShane (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) and junior LSM Collin Brown (Wernersville, Pa./Wilson Area) each caused two turnovers and combined for five ground balls while senior Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) made six stops and scooped up three loose balls.
Senior Kyle Mariboe (Hightstown, N.J.) picked up 12 saves in 45 minutes in Drew's first loss of the season while sophomore midfielder Kevin Cleary (Oakland, N.J.) grabbed seven ground balls and went 10-of-20 at the X.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, March 5th as St. Mary's travels to Chestertown, Maryland to take on No. 8 Washington College in non-conference action at 4:00 p.m.
