St. Mary's (12-6) found out late Sunday night that No. 13 Lynchburg (12-5) would be its first opponent in the Seahawks' first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament. The two teams will face-off at 7:00 pm.
St. Mary's earned the Capital Athletic Conference's automatic bid by stunning No. 8 Salisbury University, the two-time defending CAC champion as well as the two-time defending national champion, 13-11, in Sunday's conference tournament championship game. Sophomore midfielder Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) found the back of the net four times while senior Scott Marsh (Crofton, Md./South River) made a career-best 15 saves.
Lynchburg is a seven-time NCAA participant, including falling to Denison University, 10-5, in the second round of last year's national tournament. The Hornets needed an at-large bid to this year's dance as the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference champion was knocked out of the ODAC playoffs in the semifinals by Washington & Lee University, 7-6 in overtime, on Saturday.
Wednesday's meeting will be the 24th all-time in the series history which began in 1981. Lynchburg holds a 12-11 edge in the series and enters the mid-week matchup on a four-game win streak over the Seahawks from 2002 to 2005. St. Mary's last win over the Hornets came in 2001 when the Seahawks posted a 13-12 overtime win.
