St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Dominates Wesley, Advances to CAC Semifinals
St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) and sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) combined for nine goals in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team to a 22-5 win over Wesley College Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.
The win moves third-seeded St. Mary's (10-6) to the semifinal round where the Seahawks will face No. 2 seed York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, April 27. St. Mary's will look to avenge last Saturday's regular-season 9-8 loss to York which put the Seahawks third in the final CAC standings. Wesley's 2013 season comes to a close with an overall record of 6-9 (1-5 CAC) and leaves the Wolverines still looking for their first win over St. Mary's as Wesley is 0-17 all-time against the Seahawks.
Tarrant collected a career-best five goals while his fourth goal of the day gave him his 50th career tally. Love joined in the fun with four scores while senior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) contributed to the offense with one goal and five helpers.
St. Mary's opened up with a 2-0 lead at 12:46 before Wesley's sophomore James Moss (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) put the Wolverines on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at 11:20. The Seahawks then rattled off six in a row for an 8-1 advantage at the end of the first period.
First-year atttackman Jathan Mahaffey (Millersville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) found the back of the net for Wesley just 16 seconds into the start of the second quarter before St. Mary's picked up four unanswered goals for a 12-2 halftime lead.
Five different players scored for Wesley while senior Michael McQuarrie (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) dished out two assists, won 17-of-23 face-offs and scooped up a game-best 10 ground balls.
The Seahawks extended their scoring run to 6-0 at the start of the third stanza before first-year Sam Seibert (New Castle, Del./William Penn) netted an unassisted goal for Wesley. St. Mary's closed out the third with three in a row, including a man-up goal by first-year attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville).
To begin the fourth period, the home team scored a pair of goals in a 30-second span before first-year midfielder John Chenault (Laurel, Md./Pallotti) finished off a pass from McQuarrie. Senior midfielder Riley Fink (University Park, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) picked up his second of the day at 8:59 while junior midfielders Cody Tidwell (Cordova, Md./South River) and Tim Hornig (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) tallied their first of the season for a 22-4 Seahawk lead at 4:59. Two minutes later, junior defenseman Kyle Funk (Street, Md./North Harford) notched the final goal of the game.
Senior long-stick midfielder Dalton Yohn (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) anchored the Seahawk defensive effort with three caused turnovers while senior goalkeeper Scott Marsh (Crofton, Md./South River) turned away 14 shots in 43 minutes while junior Zack Blewett (Darnestown, Md./Heights) made six in the final 17 minutes.
Senior Matt Ryan (Tinton Falls, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) came up with eight saves before sophomore Sam Kennedy (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished out the game with four stops in the final 27 minutes.
