Seahawk Men's Lacrosse Blows Past Goucher
St. Mary's City, Md. – Three Seahawks netted hat tricks as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team picked up their fifth consecutive win Wednesday afternoon with a dominant 17-5 non-conference win over the Goucher College Gophers.
Senior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) notched a season-high seven points with his second hat trick of the season and four assists while junior midfielder Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) tallied a hat trick as well while adding an assist too. The third Seahawk to record a hat trick was first-year attackman Conor Jordan (Rockville, Md./Rockville).
Sophomore attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) put the Seahawks (7-4) on the scoreboard first before Goucher (4-7) tallied consecutive goals to stake a 2-1 lead at 10:37. St. Mary's then claimed a 4-2 margin at the end of the first period with a 3-0 run, including back-to-back goals by Mull.
Junior captain Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) scored the first goal of the second quarter for a three-goal Seahawk lead before first-year defender Blake Russell (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) picked up the loose ball on the face-off and then took it down for the score. St. Mary's responded with three straight for an 8-3 advantage at 3:26. The Gophers headed into halftime down four goals as first-year attackman Owen Demmerly (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) found the back of the net for his second of the day with 8.6 ticks on the clock.
Demmerly paced the Gopher attack with two goals while Russell and midfielders Zachary Fratella (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) and Steve Patterson (Minneapolis, Minn./Blake School) each chipped in a goal.
St. Mary's looked to shutout the Gophers with a 4-0 run to start off the third stanza before Patterson stopped the run with a Gopher goal at 4:39. Love and sophomore midfielder Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton) reignited the Seahawk scoring, sending their team into the final period with a 14-5 lead.
The Seahawk finally shut down Goucher in the final quarter as St. Mary's picked up the game's final three goals. First-year midfielder J.G. Hahn (Ellicott City, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tallied his first career points in today's action, finishing the contest with two goals and two assists.
Senior captain Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) was stellar on face-offs, winning 19-of-25 and scooping up a game-high nine ground balls, while senior LSM Dalton Yohn (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) was not far behind with eight ground ball pickups.
Senior Scott Marsh (Crofton, Md./South River) made 13 stops, scooped up four ground balls and caused a turnover while three Gopher goalkeepers combined for 11 saves, six ground balls and one caused turnover.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 when St. Mary's travels to Dover, Delaware to take on Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 pm.
