Seahawk Men's Lacrosse Nearly Upsets No. 11 Denison, Drops 7-6 Decision
Richmond, Va. – First-year attackman Matt Tarrant (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) and the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team almost pulled its second upset of the season as the Seahawks led No. 11 Denison University, 6-5, early in the fourth period. However, a late goal by senior attacker Cory Couture (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) lifted Denison to a 7-6 non-conference win at the Collegiate School Wednesday afternoon.
The Denison Big Red (5-0) outscored the Seahawks, 4-2, in the second half en route to its come-from-behind 7-6 victory. DU sophomore attacker Eddie Vita (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) led all scorers with a hat trick and an assist while Couture finished with two goals and an assist.
Vita knotted the contest at 6-6 at 6:43 of the fourth period as the Big Red took advantage of St. Mary's being in transition following the end of its one-minute penalty for slashing. Three minutes later, Couture notched the go-ahead goal and just Denison's second lead of the game as junior defenseman Spencer Riehl (Reisterstown, Md./St. Paul's School) caused a key turnover in the Seahawks' offensive end.
St. Mary's (2-3) turned the ball over three times, including twice in its attacking end, in the final two minutes of the game and the Big Red were able to hold on for the one-goal win.
Tarrant led the Seahawks with a goal and an assist while junior attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) raised his team-leading season total to nine assists with a pair of helpers today.
The Big Red claimed an early 1-0 lead just 38 seconds into the first quarter before midfielders Ben Love (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh School) and Will Lerch (Lothian, Md./Calverton School) found the back of the net to give St. Mary's a 2-1 edge heading into the second stanza.
Each team scored twice in the second period and the Seahawks headed into halftime with a one-goal advantage.
St. Mary's staked a 5-3 margin at 13:31 as senior attacker John Dehm (Trumbull, Conn./Middlesex School [Mass.]) finished off a Mull feed. However, the Big Red scored twice in a two-minute span to tie the game for the fourth time. Sophomore midfielder Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's School) gave the Seahawks their final lead of the game as Long tallied an unassisted goal at 13:31 of the fourth period for a 6-5 lead.
Seahawk senior goalie Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) collected 11 saves, including five in the fourth quarter, while contributing team-bests of four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Denison edged St. Mary's in shots, 27-26, while the Seahawks won the hustle category with a 34-20 margin in ground balls.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Saturday, March 17 as the Seahawks open up Capital Athletic Conference action at Frostburg State University (2-5). Game time is 1:00 pm.
