St. Mary's Men's Lacrosse Snaps Two-Game Skid
St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior attackman J.P. Lennon (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) netted half of the goals for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team as Lennon unleashed a career-best six goals in the Seahawks' 12-9 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount (Va.) University on Monday afternoon.
Today's contest was a continuation of the March 23rd game that was called due to lightning in the Arlington area. Therefore, the game started with 4:49 remaining in the first period and St. Mary's boasting a 3-0 lead.
The Seahawks (3-7, 2-3 CAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four goals in the final 6:34 of the first period, including three straight from Lennon.
Senior attackman Chris Wascak (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) put Marymount (2-10, 0-4 CAC) on the board just 55 seconds into the second quarter. First-year midfielder Ben Love (Sparks, Md./McDonogh) returned a four-goal cushion to St. Marys' with an unassisted score at 12:30. Marymount's junior attckman Drew Phillips (Parsonburg, Md./James Bennett) cut the lead to three again with his tally at 11:22 before Lennon found the back of the net two times in a row for a 7-2 Seahawk lead at 4:22.
St. Mary's headed into halftime with a 7-3 margin as Wascak converted a feed from senior midfielder Austin Griffie (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) for his 22nd goals of the season with 49 seconds left in the half.
The Seahawks outscored Marymount, 4-1, in the third stanza as St. Mary's notched the second half's first four goals. Senior attackman Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) tallied a goal and an assist in the 4-0 run while senior midfielder Jeff Cook (Falls Church, Va./JEB Stuart) broke up the scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:28.
Marymount rallied in the fourth period by outdueling the Seahawks, 5-1. The Saints scored the final quarter's first two goals to close the gap to 11-6 at 10:15. Fourteen seconds later, sophomore LSM Dalton Yohn (Taylorsville, Md./South Carroll) scooped up the ground ball following a Saint turnover and fired in first career goal. The Saints then rattled off three straight in a span of 1:38 to pull within 12-9 at 1:26.
Lennon paced the offense with six goals while six other Seahawks found the back of the net. Becraft contributed a goal and an assist.
In goal, junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) made four saves and had a ground ball in the first half while senior Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) collected eight stops and three ground balls in the final 30 minutes.
St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, April 9 as the Seahawks welcome No. 3 Stevenson University to Seahawk Stadium for another conference tilt at 1:00 pm.
