Emmitsburg, Md. – In their final matchup before the Christmas holiday, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball took on Division I Mount St. Mary's University Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game. The Seahawks dropped an 83-44 decision to the Mount, who improved to 3-9 on the season, in front of 1,225 strong at Knott Arena. The loss does not count against St. Mary's overall record.

Not only did the contest feature a pair of Maryland schools, the game pitted a pair of St. Mary's alumni against each other as Seahawk mentor, Chris Harney '97, faced his former player and current Mount head coach, Dan Engelstad '07.

St. Mary's 44, Mount St. Mary's 83

How It Happened

  • The Mount notched the first basket of the game at 18:02 before first-year forward Naheed John (Rockville, Md./Massanutten Military [Va.]) evened the score 20 seconds later with his jumper off an assist from junior guard Matt Ayoub (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson).
  • MSMU then scored the next 11 points before an Ayoub three-pointer at 12:48 interrupted the run. The Mount netted 10 more points before junior guard Justin Milstead (Fort Washington, Md./IDEA Charter) added to the Seahawk scoring with a triple of his own at 9:31. A steal and layup by Milstead cut the deficit to 25-10 at 7:50.
  • The hosts owned a 43-19 advantage at halftime as St. Mary's was limited to eight field goals in the first 20 minutes. Milstead's six points and four rebounds off the bench paced the Seahawks in the first half as five different players scored.
  • Junior forward Phil Newsome (Mitchellville, Md./Potomac) knocked down a pair of free throws at 18:52 for the first points of the second half but the Mount continued to roll in picking up their third consecutive win.
  • St. Mary's shot better from downtown in the second stanza, raining in four three's while going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line.

Inside the Box Score

  • Milstead finished with team-bests of 10 points, six rebounds, and two steals. His game totals in rebounds and steals are both season-highs.
  • Newsome and Ayoub both contributed six points while junior guard Reggie Rouse (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) dished out four of the team's nine assists.
  • Vado Morse put up a career-high 18 points in leading the Mount while Jalen Gibbs collected 13 points and a game-best nine boards as MSMU won the rebounding battle, 52-27. The hosts also went 21-of-24 at the charity stripe and rejected nine shots but displayed a dismal effort from behind the three-point line, going 4-of-23 (17.4%), including 1-of-12 in the first half.
