St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team has been working hard during their month-long preseason and they're itching to officially tip-off their 2017-18 campaign in just six days.
The slate is packed to the max with 25 contests, including 11 home games at the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena and a matchup with Division I Towson University on November 27 at the SECU Arena at 6:00 p.m. Tickets for the Towson game can be purchased now at http://towsontigers.com/sports/2014/7/30/MBB_0730144815.aspx.
During 13-year head coach Chris Harney's tenure, the Seahawks have faced four non-Division III opponents, including taking on Division II Bowie State University in back-to-back seasons, and have posted a 1-4 record in those contests. In addition, St. Mary's has a gained an NCAA Tournament berth in three of the five seasons when playing an exhibition game a non-Division III opponent.
Three of the St. Mary's opponents have also competed in the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Tournament – Christopher Newport University (Third Round), Salisbury University (First Round), and Husson University (First Round). Christopher Newport, the two-time defending Capital Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champion, enters the season ranked 14th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 preseason poll while Salisbury received votes in the final 207 D3hoops.com Top 25.
New this year, the Seahawk men will play in the first half of some of the doubleheaders and tip-off at 6:00 p.m. So please be mindful of the starting times when you're checking out the schedule and planning out which games to attend.
St. Mary's opens up against Gallaudet University at home on Nov. 15 before traveling to Shenandoah University (Winchester, Va.) on the 17th. The team returns to the O'Brien ARC Arena on Nov. 19 to take on Lynchburg College for the Dan Greene Memorial Game. The Seahawks conclude November on the road – at Penn State Altoona (Nov. 21), at Towson, and at University of Mary Washington (Nov. 29) for the CAC opener.
The Seahawks tip-off December with a pair of home conference games against Marymount (Va.) University (Dec. 2) and CNU (Dec. 6). St. Mary's spends the rest of December on the road with tilts at Frostburg State University (Dec. 9), vs. Olivet College (Dec. 16), vs. Husson (Dec. 17), and at Greensboro College (Dec. 30). The Olivet and Husson contests will be played in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as part of the Trip Sports Cruzin' Classic before the team boards a cruise ship for a four-day trip to the Bahamas.
St. Mary's hits January with a two-game home-stand against conference foes, Southern Virginia University (Jan. 3) and Wesley College (Jan. 6). The squad heads back out on the road for matchups at Salisbury (Jan. 10) and at Penn State Harrisburg (Jan. 13). York College of Pennsylvania wraps up the first half of CAC action on Jan. 17 at the O'Brien ARC Arena.
The second half of league play begins on the road at Marymount (Jan. 20) and at CNU (Jan. 24) before hosting Frostburg State (Jan. 27) and Mary Washington (Jan. 31) to finish off the month of January.
February begins on the road as the Seahawks travel to Dover, Delaware, to face Wesley (Feb. 3) before closing out the regular season with two home games sandwiching two road games. Salisbury comes to town on the 7th followed by contests at Southern Virginia (Feb. 10) and at York (Feb. 14). Senior Day will be celebrated against Penn State Harrisburg on the 17th.
The CAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament begins February 20 with first-round action followed by the semifinals on the 22nd and the title game on the 24th.
Last season, St. Mary's finished with a 13-13 (8-10 CAC) overall record and locked up the No. 5 seed in the 2017 CAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
