LaGuerre pours in 31 as Seahawk Men's Basketball Faces Delaware Valley

Doylestown, Pa. – Senior captain Nicholas LaGuerre's (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) 31 points were not enough Wednesday night as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team dropped their second straight game. The Seahawks lost another nail-biter, falling 80-79 to Delaware Valley College in non-conference action.

For the second time in his career, LaGuerre put up a 30-point performance as he shot 10-for-14, including going 3-for-4 from downtown. He was also 8-of-10 from the free throw line while adding seven assists and three rebounds. Sixteen of LaGuerre's 31 points came in the first half as he missed only one field goal in seven attempts.

It was a tight contest all night long as neither side was able to mount a double-digit lead. There were 10 lead changes in the second half alone, including three in the last 32 seconds.

Delaware Valley (1-2) owned a 72-68 lead at 3:49 before a jumper by junior guard Donya Jackson (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), a defensive stop, and a three-pointer by junior guard Tanner Brooks (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) put the Seahawks back on top, 73-72, at 3:01. A pair of empty possessions for the Aggies allowed St. Mary's to post a 77-74 lead at 1:20.

DelVal reclaimed a 78-77 lead with 32 seconds left after junior guard Zach Sly (St. Petersburg, Fla./Faith Baptist Christian) grabbed the offensive rebound and found junior Chris Moran (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall-Coplay). Brooks answered with a driving layup 15 seconds later after weaving through the defense. Sly knocked down the go-ahead basket at 00:12 on a driving full-court lay-up.

Jackson finished the night with 13 points while junior captain Troy Spurrier (Mt. Airy, Md./Glenelg) contributed 10 points off the bench. Senior center MacGyver Biniak (Elkridge, Md./Howard) helped the Seahawks post a 33-28 rebounding margin as Biniak hauled in a game-high nine caroms and added eight points.

After Moran scored the Aggies' first five points for an early 5-4 lead, St. Mary's (1-2) rolled to a 29-20 advantage at 8:11 for its biggest lead of the game. DelVal used a 10-0 run to retake the lead by one at 5:41. Spurrier's layup returned the lead in the Seahawks' favor, 33-32, at 4:20. The Aggies would go on to close the half on a 5-2 run for a 37-35 advantage at halftime.

Five Aggies scored in double-digits led by Moran's 17 points while senior guard Nick Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) tallied 16 points and four assists. Junior forward Barry Brockington (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) collected 13 points and eight rebounds.

Weather permitting, the Seahawks will make the trek to Buffalo, N.Y. for The Knee Center of WNY Tournament hosted by Medaille College on Friday-Saturday, November 21-22. St. Mary's will face Nazareth College on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
