Seahawk Men's Basketball Starts off New Season with No. 19 Ranking

Minneapolis, Minn. –, your number one source for Division III basketball information, has released the Preseason Men's Basketball Top 25 Wednesday afternoon, signifying that the beginning of the 2012-13 basketball season is just around the corner.

The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Chris Harney, has earned a preseason ranking of No. 19 in this year's pre-campaign poll.  Today's preseason poll marks the fifth consecutive season that the Seahawks have recognized by in their annual preseason rankings.

St. Mary's received votes in the 2008-09 preseason poll then broke the Top 25 with a No. 20 ranking the following season.  In 2010-11, the Seahawks started the season ranked 11th while beginning last season at No. 15.

The Seahawks finished last season with a 20-8 overall record and their fourth consecutive Capital Athletic Conference regular-season title after finishing atop of the league standings with a 13-3 CAC mark.

The top five teams in the preseason poll are No. 1 MIT (2012 national runner-up), No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan College (2006 national champion, 2007 national runner-up), No. 3 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (2012 national champion), No. 4 Middlebury College (2011 NCAA Final Four team), and No. 5 Amherst College (2007 national champion, 2008 national runner-up).

St. Mary's 25-contest regular-season schedule highlights two schools ranked in the Top 25 – No. 9 Franklin & Marshall College and No. 24 Randolph-Macon College.  The Seahawks square off against Randolph-Macon in their second game of the season at the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic hosted by Stevenson University on November 17-18.

The Seahawks will battle Franklin & Marshall on Ed Cole Court in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena during the second half of the season on January 7, 2012 at 7:00 pm.

The schedule also features a pair of teams that received votes in the preseason poll – Christopher Newport University and Capital (Ohio) University.  St. Mary's will face Capital at the Carnegie Mellon University Invitational in Pittsburgh on November 24-25 while taking on future Capital Athletic Conference member, Christopher Newport (joining in 2013-14), at home on December 5 at 7:00 pm.
