Rockville, Md. – Junior captain Devin Spencer (Baltimore, Md./Towson Catholic) became the second St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball player this season to earn PrestoSports Pride of Maryland Player of the Week honors as announced by PrestoSports Monday afternoon.
Spencer averaged 16.0 points in a 2-0 week for the Seahawks (13-5, 6-2 CAC) as he shot 55.6-percent from the field, including 58.3% from downtown. He also averaged 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game as St. Mary's snapped its two-game skid with a 78-75 Capital Athletic Conference win at Salisbury University on January 18. The Seahawks followed that win with a 59-56 league triumph at Stevenson University to the end the week.
The 5-11 guard tallied a career - and game-high 21 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the three-point line to help lead the Seahawks past Salisbury. In addition to posting six straight points in a 16-second span with 1:21 left in the game, Spencer's two clutch free throws in the dying seconds of the second half clinched the game for the Seahawks as Salisbury was unable to convert a final three-point attempt to send the game into overtime.
Spencer then lifted the Seahawks to a thrilling win over Stevenson by hitting the eventual game-winning three-pointer with 51 seconds left in the second half. He went 4-of-9 from the field, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and tallied a total of 11 points.
Spencer leads the conference in free throw percentage with 85.4% while ranking sixth with a 2.9 assist average. He also ranks in the top 10 in three-point field goal percentage with 34.3%.
St. Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, January 25 as the Seahawks welcome Hood College (11-6, 3-5 CAC) to Ed Cole Court in the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena for a league contest at 8:00 pm.
