Wilson Elevated to Associate Head Coach
St. Mary's City, Md. – Chris Harney, head coach of the Seahawks, announced Thursday the promotion of Nick Wilson (Rockville, Md.) to associate head coach of the men's basketball program at St. Mary's College of Maryland. Wilson, who has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach, begins his new role immediately.
Wilson said, "I'd like to thank Coach Harney for his support and for his confidence in me. During my time here, I've been fortunate to work with an outstanding staff of coaches and dedicated student-athletes. Our success is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of Coach Harney and the entire St. Mary's program. I look forward to my continued role with the Seahawks as we work towards our goal of bringing a national championship to St. Mary's."
The Rockville native came to St. Mary's in 2007 after serving as the head junior varsity coach and varsity assistant at Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore under legendary coach Mark Amatucci.
Wilson has brought many positive contributions and
additions to the program. Since joining St. Mary's, the
Seahawks have won an average of 22 games for a three-year mark of
66-21 (37-11 CAC) and have been ranked in the Top 25 for three
straight years. The program has also reached the Sweet
Sixteen twice.
"Coach Wilson has been an invaluable asset to the St. Mary's College men's basketball program and has earned this promotion through his hard work and dedication to our players," stated Harney.
He is responsible for numerous aspects of the program, including overall team defense, advanced scouting of opponents, offensive skill development with both post and perimeter players as well as practice and game preparation.
Wilson works primarily with the St. Mary's defense and coordinates advanced scouting of opponents. For the last two seasons, the Seahawks have ranked in the top three in the Capital Athletic Conference in steals (1st), scoring defense (2nd), three-point field goal percentage (2nd), and field goal percentage defense (3rd).
Wilson served as a student assistant for the Towson University men's basketball program for five seasons (1999-2004), assisting with individual skill improvement as well as strength & conditioning workouts for perimeter and post players. He helped the coaching staff with film exchange, scouting, game stats, and team travel plans as well. Wilson also served as the video coordinator and was responsible for the Tigers' student managers.
He earned a bachelor of science in physical education from Towson in May of 2004 and then completed graduate work in athletic coaching education at West Virginia University in May of 2007. Wilson is currently a physical education and health teacher at Patuxent High School in Lusby.
